Un Brigadista
When my father, Sol Frankel, died in May 2007 I found a box containing letters, photographs and other documents dating from the time of the Spanish Civil War.
I decided to make an artwork integrating this archival material with other images, using intaglio etching and photogravure techniques.
My purpose was to create a lasting tribute to my father and all the volunteers who went to Spain hoping to bring a halt to the rise of Fascism.
I wanted to suggest a sense of the timelessness of this impulse and the universality of the young soldier's experience through the particularity of the material left behind and my manipulation of the imagery.
The boxed set is in an edition of 20.
